Beluga Whale Calf Born in Chicago

There's a new resident at the Shedd Aquarium in Chicago.

According to the article in the Chicago Sun-times, the not yet named Beluga calf was born on Monday, July 21st at 5:59 PM. Zoo employees are carefully monitoring the development of this calf as the mother of this calf had already lost one its newborns about seven years ago.

Beluga whales are also known as white whales or "sea canarys" on account of their underwater squeaks and squeals. The Belugas have an approximate population of 100,000 worldwide.
