A bit about squids

Earlier this week, New Zealand fisherman caught a colossal squid in the Antarctic waters. This squid weighed over 450 kg and was measured at over 10 meters in length.

The colossal squid differs from its cousin the giant squid in that the colossal appears to be the larger of the two species. Much of the colossal's length comes from its mantle (body) rather than its tentacles like the giant's, causing it to be the heavier of the two as well.

The biggest difference for The Animal Blog purposes: the giant squid is the only on to have been caught alive on video.

That's a lot of squid!
